It’s almost strawberry time in the Northwest! And I check on the progress of my 4 planters full of strawberries nearly every day. This year I added a 4th variety to the three I started last year; giving me 2 varieties of June-bearing and 2 of Ever-bearing. All 3 sets of year-old plants have bloomed heavily this year, and my earliest berry harvest should be ready for sampling within the next couple of weeks. I prefer to pick them in the afternoon when they’re nicely warmed by the sun, and at their juiciest and most flavorful. And of course I eat them immediately while they’re still warm.

Ever since I was a young girl I have adored the splashy color and intoxicating fragrance of lilacs that burst into armloads of splendor each May. In fact, when I was around 12 or 13 my parents permitted me to decorate my bedroom for the first time. And guess what I chose as my color palette?!? Yep! All the amazing colors that lilacs showcase so boldly! And even to this day, the colors of the lilac spectrum remain among my favorites. Is it any wonder that communities all across the country, including Spokane, just across the state line from me, choose the exuberant lilac as the centerpiece of their annual May festivities?

So here we are on the very first day of January in North Idaho. I picked out this picture a month ago and have saved it ‘specially for today’s wallpaper. And wouldn’t you know… today my thermometer topped out at 47-degrees, and that, combined with a reappearance of some sunshine, worked to erase nearly all traces of the winter wonderland we had just a day and a half ago!
